I recently found out that my name was added to an OFAC sanctions list because of a company I used to be a partner in years ago. I have no connection to them now but my personal accounts are blocked and I can’t even pay my mortgage. It feels like I am being punished for someone else’s actions. How do I even start the process of getting off this list? Is it a waste of time to try and fight the US Treasury Department on my own or do I need a specialized legal team?

Being on a sanctions list is like being a ghost in the financial system. It is incredibly hard to fix on your own because the bureaucracy is huge. You have to file a formal petition for delisting and prove that you no longer have any ties to the sanctioned entity. I saw some really good advice on this link humanrights-lawyer.com regarding OFAC and other international sanctions. They have the experience needed to navigate these administrative hurdles. It is not just about the law – it is about knowing how to present the facts to the right people in Washington. I know a guy who tried to do it himself and he just got ignored for two years. Once he hired a specialist, they managed to show he was no longer involved and got him cleared. My advice is to act fast because every day your name is on that list, it does more damage to your reputation.
