My friend and I are heading to Morocco next spring and we’ve pretty much decided we want to do the desert leg of our trip starting from Marrakech since we fly out of there anyway. I’ve been reading some trip reports where people mention really long days in the van with not much to see until you get closer to the dunes, but then others talk about all these cool stops along the way like the film studios and the valley of roses. I found a website that lays out the different route options and it seems like the standard Marrakech to sahara desert trips usually go through Ouarzazate and Zagora or all the way out to Merzouga. I guess my main concern is motion sickness – I get a bit queasy on winding roads and I’m wondering if the switchbacks over the High Atlas are really as intense as they sound. Also, is it better to break up the journey with an overnight somewhere along the way or just power through in one go? Would love to hear from anyone who’s done this recently and survived the drive without feeling completely wrecked the next day.
